Harvesting now.

Some good harvests at the moment considering the wet weather (which I'm sure is having a detrimental effect on the soft fruit, in particular) The potatoes are particularly good. Good sized too; if they weren't earlies they'd make good baking potatoes. As it is, I feel a rush of dauphinose type recipes with them.

We've had about 8lbs of strawberries in total so far, and after a clamour for jam from the boys I've made about 8 jars of strawberry jam - a motley collection of jars and not all of them were 1lb sized. Although I've made a reasonable amount of jam over the years I'd not done strawberry as I'd heard tales of poor setting with it, but with a little help from my friends on Downsizer it seems to have set just fine. Toast is now the most popular breakfast since strawberry jam is available.

Today Tim bought home red currants, more potatoes, lots of sweet peas, roses, sweet williams and alstromerias. Oh and very significantly the first courgettes!
The photos show the extent of the recent strawberry harvest and the after pictures once the jam had been made

A Hot Weekend

Hot and sticky though this weekend was, we have still had a very productive time (and inspite of my streaming cold)

Saturday morning, we went to the allotment. Starting to look abundant up there (and I don't just mean the weeds!) Tim cleared the overwintering onions which have been taken to the house, and rotavated that bay. He planted out sweetcorn, runner beans and a couple of outdoor tomatoes. I strimmed round the fruit bed. Its a weedy patch that, but its hard to dig round it all as the fruit bushes are in the way so we've decided to strim it as the weeds are mostly grass based and then plan to mulch it with composted chicken bedding. This tack has worked well on the strawberry patch. I then started some more tidying in the cutting garden. My sweetpeas needed further tying in as they grow up the canes.
We came home with a great harvest - first small harvest of new potatoes, over 3 lb strawberries, a couple of broad bean pods - there are more to come - the onions and loads of cut flowers including alstromerias, roses, lavender, sweet williams, pinks, and quaking grass to dry.

It was very hot up there and we always take drinking water and have a bit of a rule that once you've run out of water then that's the time to come home! A fellow plot holder pointed out that a flock of upset, screeching rooks were like that, as there was a red kite flying above them. We'd have thought him a buzzard, but Paul pointed out the bird's forked tail as being the way to tell the difference.

As it was such a hot day we decided that for the afternoon, we'd follow the cats' example and drape ourselves about the garden with cake and tea and books. I did put a batch of meringues in the oven to dry out but it was too hot to spend too long in the kitchen A dinner at the local pub followed and for a change from wine we decided to enjoy a jug of Pims with our meal which seemed entirely appropriate.

Yesterday morning, whilst I made up some strawberry ice-cream and pottered in the kitchen, Tim cleaned out the chicken house and worked in the greenhouse, potting on tomato plants and putting the larger of the chillies on to the deck by the house. He also got the grass cut. Our wildflower meadow is coming on and there are poppies coming up. I think it'll take a year or two to become as we envisage it, due to things germinating at different times and the balance of plants settling down.

We've made a start on our new kitchen project by going to a showroom in the afternoon and we can now visualise better how we want the room to look. I don't think I've put much on here about our current kitchen but I'm doing processing and cooking on a single fan oven with the seals going (its about 14 years old we think) plus a ceramic hob with only 3 rings working. The kitchen faces north east and can be dark at times so the lighting needs improving although our plan to have pale units will also help reflect light we think. At the moment we have mid toned wooden units and terracotta red walls. Cooker wise we plan to have a range type cooker as I can then do a batch of cake or soup or similar whilst doing tea at the same time. I'll be able to cook when I want to and not merely when the cooker is free. This currently takes some juggling.

Today I'm doing some light pottering about the house but am mostly going to read and relax to try and get this cold out of my system.
The picture for this post is the local pub - and the food is very good too!

Strawberries

Lots of great ripe strawberries on the plot at the moment. We picked nearly 2 1/2lb at the weekend. Three of them as pictured above were whoppers. That really is a £1 coin in the front as a scale indicator.

Bulk food budget notes for May

Lets see if I can set this out properly (looking at the post I've just done about the order, I can see that blogger is in to at least double spacing, though I've not asked it to be -alterations have made no difference it seems so my appols if this spaces its self badly)

Bulk food spend = 268.61 (this is Infinity, milkman and a trip to Wessex Mill for flour)
Weekly food spend = 234.83

Total = 503.44

weekly average 100.68 - 5 week month

So far over the 2 months, 9 weeks in total the average weekly spend has been 111.32 which I don't think is bad for a family of four

Looking ahead in June I've no need to place an order with Infinity so it will be very interesting to see how that affects the figures

Bulk Buy update

We had our second bulk delivery from Infinity foods a couple of weeks ago and I've been meaning to put the details on here. I can now finally find the time to sit and do so. Here's what we ordered this time

Ecover loo cleaner x6
chocolate scented shampoo for the kids x6
hand wash x6
maple flakes x 12 (again)
choco crunch stuff x 12(double quantities this time)
dulche de leche x6(oh dear!)
tinned sweetcorn x 12
baking paper x 12 (recycled and unbleached)
ginger cordial x 6(great hot for any hint of a cold)
icing sugar 4 x 3kg -doesn't come in a smaller pack size (its unbleached so I've discovered it doesn't make white icing - tastes the same though)
granulated sugar x 10 (did a lot of home wine making so needed to replenish stock)
caster sugar x 10
ecover laundry 5l
ecover fabric softener 5l
mayonaise x 6
green thai curry paste x 6
sweet thai chilli dip x 6
kitchen towel x 12

There is a bigger range of non food stuffs this time to add to our range of things in stock. I've also tried out some ingredient things like the sweet thai chilli paste and mayonaise as I think these will go well with the sort of fresh things we get from the plot or farm shop. I also replenished a few things that whilst they'd not run out exactly, I could see were likely to have run out whilst awaiting the next order. My plan is to not need to order from Infinity during June as we're well stocked up now.

I've done the budget workings out but I'll do that as a separate post next to make it easier to keep track of.

All that remains is to add a picture - so something else from the recent smallholders show I think
